Didn't take many pictures today, probably because of rain early on. We got a ride back to the trailhead, and started the day with a steep climb. If memory serves, the drizzle increased in volume and became a heavy rain as we reached the top. We put all our rain gear on, and of course 15-20 minutes later it stopped. But I still didn't take my camera out until later in the day. We ran into a friendly couple en route, and walked with them a while.
I liked this grouse blind:
We stopped at a very nice tea house in the first village we went through. The scones were delicious - and very light, not the usual dense type.
A closeup:
We went up to the Captain Cook monument, and took the correct (but unmarked) Cleveland Way path out of the four available.
Stayed at the Royal Oak Hotel in Great Ayton. According to their website (as of Sept. 2010):
THE BEST IN YORKSHIRE HOSPITALITY
The Monaghan family have run The Royal Oak Country Inn & Restaurant since 1978. This 18th Century rural hostelry is at the heart of the village. Original features include the beamed ceilings and welcoming log fires, and add to the charm and character of this traditional inn.
I concur. They were absolutely wonderful to us. And I had one of my favorite meals of the whole trip here: a light dish called something like "Spicy Bang Bang Chicken." The chicken was tender and delicious with Thai spices, on a bed of perfect fresh lettuce, and it was exactly the right amount of food for my dinner.
