Day 1: Falmouth to Veryan

N.B. This is one of four posts about my trip to Cornwall to walk a portion of the South West Coast Path.

The Walk started with two ferry rides, from Falmouth to St Mawes, and from St Mawes to Place.  (Proposed motto: "A Great Place to Live") A place called Place seems oddly fitting, once we saw a street called Avenue Road in Falmouth.  But it's easy to imagine comedic possibilities for those who move there and need to give their new mailing address.

There was a bit of light rain at the start of the day, which could have been bad (I didn't have a rain jacket with me), but it eased up and mostly served to keep us cool on steep climbs.

We got to talking to a couple from Kent who were on the ferry with us.  This particular section of the 630-mile South West Coast Path is the only portion they have not yet completed, so they were taking 7 days to wrap it all up.  (They also mentioned that they were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on this trip.  Amazing.  Based on their looks, I would assume that they married no later than age 10!)

Once we reached Place, we were no longer on Easy Street - no more ferry rides for us!  We started walking toward St Anthony's Head.

There were wild blackberries to refresh us on the climb, and tantalizing glimpses of inaccessible beaches below:

We stayed at two different B&Bs in Veryan, but dined at the village's one pub - along with the couple that we'd met on the ferry earlier that morning.  It was Quiz Night at the pub, but that didn't start until 9 p.m.  Zzzzzzzz....

Walked about 15 miles today (including going up and down the stairs of the B&B a few times for breakfast and bringing down luggage, and walking around Falmouth, St Mawes, and Place in search of a rain jacket).
