This time, I am really struck by how adventurous the boy is. After all, Russell is outrageously, unselfconsciously uncool. But when death-defying adventures come to him -- e.g., when the old man dangles him on a rope under the flying house, and when the "snipe" throws him up in the air -- his reaction is delight, not terror.
